It is said that St Patrick picked a shamrock from the ground in Ireland in order to prove the existence of The Son, The Father and The Holy Ghost.  St Patrick used the trefoil leaves to explain the unity of the Holy Trinity – three parts yet one whole – to the pagans during his Christian teachings.
